National Geographic is known for its incredible nature photography – that’s the whole point of the magazine! So, imagine the incredible talent (and the inspiring images produced from that talent) who submitted to – and won – the magazine’s 12-week Traveler Photo Contest. First place went to photographer and SCUBA instructor Anuar Patjane Floriuk for his stunning image of a humpback whale family off the Mexican coast.
Floriuk says the photograph was pure chance; he’d been trying to get close-up shots of the head of the mom before deciding to give the group their space. At this new farther-away vantage point, the frame came together to create this dynamic composition of light and dark, large and small. The incredible photograph won Floriuk and a friend an eight-day National Geographic Photo Expedition to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal so we can assuredly expect more stunning work from him in the near future.
