Although the legend of vampires predates Dracula by a few centuries, we tend to associate Gothic art and literature – including novellas such as Dracula and Frankenstein – with the Victorian Age. And it is old, sepia drenched Victorian-era photographs that artist Colin Batty has painted onto, turning a whole wealth of sullen-looking figures into Gothic monsters, evoking a particularly chilling era of art history – the era of Gothic. In my personal opinion, old Victorian photographs are creepy anyway, and Batty has just gone confirmed what I already guessed at – that we all find them pretty creepy. Well, we do now at least. Shudders.
