Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew – also known as Lustik – is highly regarded in his home nation Thailand, where he has scooped a whole host of national art prizes, winning the National Art Prize for Painting twice before he had even turned 28. On first sight – and even last sight – his art looks like an illusion, a deft sleight of hand, a magical trick that bewilders as much as it haunts. Unlike any good magician, though, this conjuror of the art world is happy to reveal the secrets of his trade in a video posted to his Facebook page. Watching the video only will only spoil the mystery, though. Instead, I invite you to cast your innocent eyes over Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew’s virtuoso figurative scenes and portraits and just marvel at the way they smash the boundaries of space and time. Don’t ask questions – just absorb.
