Artist Jason Hackenwerth is using the familiar and comforting medium of balloon artistry and turning it into massive sculptures. Each piece reminds us of some fantastical organic or biological form as if come to life out of a science experiment. Shapes resembling amoebas, cells, or rhizopods float across the room and come to life in vivid colors. Hackenwerth starts each piece by drawing and sketching to see how the form will work on a large scale. He then inflates the balloons and arranges them in various structures to see what will work.
“Using balloons as a medium for expression came from a desire to connect with a wider audience,” Hackenwerth says on the use of balloons for his art pieces. “Balloons are accessible and they seem to have a magic ability for people to feel joy. Perhaps it is a regression to childhood.” [h/t beautifuldecay.com]
