Isabel Martinez, Chilean-born but currently based in Canada, is an artist who primarily creates chromogenic prints that center around the theories of quantum mechanics, and the concepts of space and time. Of her work, Martinez says, “I attempt to articulate something in-between the freezing of time – that so often characterizes photography – and its relentless passing.” We can take these words with us as we look at two series’ of her work – Quantum Blink and The Weekend. In Quantum Blink, one moment in time is eerily projected on to another. The effect is not jarring but disquieting. In The Weekend, a moment in time is seemingly interrupted by another, completely random moment. And the effect is quite hypnotic.
